Several athletes from Herts Phoenix made the short journey to the home of Cross Country at Parliament Hill Fields, Hampstead Heath last Saturday to compete in the South of England Cross Country Championships. It was another perfect day for cross country running although the conditions underfoot were very muddy which made the various courses used even more demanding for the athletes. |

Last evening I attended the Welwyn & Hatfield Sports Awards, also attended by Ian Miller, who presented one of the awards and the Humphries and Williams Families. I am pleased to report that Herts Phoenix was very successful. The pinnacle of success for the Club was the award for Club of the Year but our Women’s Team was also awarded Team of the Year and one of our outstanding young athletes, Richard Humphries, was awarded School Pupil of the Year. |

The indoor season got off to a fantastic start for Herts Phoenix athletes with the Club collecting a total of 5 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronze medals at these prestigious championships. Many other athletes made finals and had the chance to mark their progress in winter training with the opportunity to compete against some of the country’s finest athletes. Last Saturday saw the Metropolitan Cross Country Match which was held over the undulating course at Horsenden Hill, Perivale. There was a very good turnout from the Senior Men for this penultimate Met League race, supported by a smaller number than usual of the Club’s younger athletes. The course was made much tougher by the very muddy conditions under foot following the recent wet weather. History was made as the Lea Valley Schools held its first ever Indoor District Championships thanks to being able to use the new all purpose built High Performance Centre at Picketts Lock. The event was made possible with the support of Herts Phoenix AC and sponsorship from the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
