Herts Phoenix Senior women enjoyed a fantastic result in their final match of 3 in their 2009 UK Women’s league division 4 campaign on Sunday 2nd August at Gateshead. The team were sitting at the top of the league after the first two matches and only had to finish in the top 4 in the final match to be assured of promotion and with a reasonably strong line up for the match the women were confident. Herts Phoenix Senior Men's team made the journey north to St Ives last Saturday to compete in their final match of the season knowing that they had to win to stand a chance of promotion back to Division two next season. Not only did they win the match but also secured promotion by tying with Vale of Aylesbury and overtaking Bedford & County AC to win the League by just 5 points. There were 22 individual wins out of the 34 events, backed up by 9 runners up and victories in both relays to round off a very successful season so that the team can now look forward to life in the higher division with some optimism. Exams over, school term finished so holidays have started. This meant many athletes were not around for the last NJAL match of the year at Mayesbrook Arena on 26th July. That said we were able to field athletes for most events. The weather stayed dry, but the gusty wind prevented personal best performances, apart from a few exceptions.

On a warm and sunny afternoon at Ware on 25th July the HPX women’s team put up a good show against one of their main rivals for promotion, Ashford AC to finish a close second to them in the match. With a strong wind against for the sprinters and hurdlers, times were never going to be fast but a host of solid performances meant that the match result of Ashford’s 108 points to HPX’s 97 was in the balance until the final events.
