Phoenix young athletes rise to the challenge with a great home win PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 04 June 2007
Herts Phoenix’s National Young Athletes Team held their Home Fixture on Sunday at the Gosling Stadium, Welwyn Garden City where it played host to teams from Thames Valley Harriers, Ealing, Southall & Middx and Invicta East Kent, recording an outstanding win. Full set of results now available on this web site.

Whilst no new Club Records were set, there were a few new personal best performances to put smiles on a number of the team’s faces.  In the Under 17 Boys events, Ben Montgomery competed for the first time this season and collected a victory in the Hammer competition. In fact there were more good results for the Under 17 Throwers with Chris Ashworth in the Shot Putt, the Discuss and a second place alongside newcomer Ben in the Hammer. Nathan Wake collected a victory in the Javelin as did Richard Parker, with Leo Lundgren also taking a victory in the Discus, and Louis Walshe in an unaccustomed role of throwing the Shot collecting a second place.

Nathan Wake stepped down a distance to take victory in the 200m in a time of 22.9 coming close to his pb, whilst Alex Veitch and Joe Gaynor (800m) and Louis Walshe and Tom Gough (1500m) also notched up first places. Leo Lundgren picked up two more victories in the Long and Triple Jump competitions and Joe Gaynor partnering him in the Long Jump also won. Ross Amorgie picked up second places in the High Jump; 100m Hurdles and 400m Hurdles, with Elliott King making his first appearance for the Team collecting a victory in the 100m Hurdles, and a second place in the 200m.

The 4x400m Squad of Walshe, Armorgie, Lundgren and Wake took a victory, and Gaynor Ashworth, Parker and Gough a second in the 4x100m.

The Under 17 Women had a good day too, with Nina Edwards and Nicola Bryan winning the 100m, Claire Humphries a second in the 200m with a new personal best of 26.4, and Katie Grehan partnering her for another victory. Edwards returned to take another victory in the 300m alongside Emily Stevens.

Laura Whitehead took a comfortable victory in the 3000m with a new personal best of 11:44.3, Humphries and Edwards both took victories in the 80mHurdles as did Deborah Willis and Danielle Cracknell in the 300mHurdles.

Deborah Willis picked up another victory in the Shot Putt, along with Emily Stevens taking a second place. Katie Grehan and Claire Humphries collected with victories in the Javelin, with Claire collecting her second personal best of the day. Danielle Currie and Cracknell both won the Long Jump, and Grehan collected her third victory of the day in the Triple Jump, as did Danielle Currie.

Deborah Willis couldn’t make it three out of three on the day, but collected a second place in the High Jump with a new pb, and Stephanie Gaynor collected a victory alongside her. The 4x100m Relay went very much to plan as well with Humphries, Willis, Stevens and Edwards collecting the prize.

There were some good performances amongst the Under15 Boys, with Andrew Walshe recording a new pb in the 400m. There were victories for Andrew Walshe (400m); Nick McNaught and Simon Wake (800m); Ed Shepherd (1500m); Richard Humphries and George Herbert (Discus) and Tim Warner in the Pole Vault.

Under 15 Boys Team:    Luke Evans; Nick McNaught, Simon Wake, Andrew Walshe, David Wilson, Ed Shepherd; Richard Humphries; George Herbert, George Stingemore and Elliott Hurrell, with Wilson, Wake, Walshe and McNaught winning the 4x400m Relay.

There were victories amongst the Under 15 Girls too, with a double in the 75mHurdles coming from Hannah Lloyd and Katie Caulfield; another double in the High Jump with Jenny Hutchings and Gemma Armorgie. Millie Lundgren and Sarah Miller carried on with the winning ways from Saturday’s Women’s Match with double victories in the Discus and Javelin; with Sarah doubling up with Jenny Hutchings to take the Shot, and Jenny producing a new pb.

Hannah Lloyd took another victory in the Long Jump, whilst Ella Fuller took victory in the 1500m, and although not winning her race, Ashleigh Cattle set a new personal best in her 1500m race, whilst twin sister Charlotte took second in her 800m race, and Sian Harry in her first race of the season collected a victory in her 800m race.

Under 15 Girls Team:    Gemma Armorgie, Hannah Lloyd, Katie Caulfield, Charlotte Cattle, Sian Harry, Ashleigh cattle, Ella Fuller, Jenny Hutchings, Sarah Miller and Millie Lundgren.

Both the Under 13 Boys and Girls are the Club’s new crop of athletes many of whom were competing in the Sportshall Athletics over the winter, but who are showing a great deal of promise. In the Girls, Shannon Procter, Natasha Hadley, Nelly Dalton, Bethany Cracknell and Melisa Hadley all recorded victories in their various events, whilst Isabella Cacciotove, Ella Lloyd and Lizzie Bird also recorded good places in their events.

Elliott Walker was the only Under 13 Boy to record a victory and he did that in the Shot Putt whilst Simon Bevan, Richard Gill, Andrew Bowden, and Cameron Ashworth gave good supporting performances.
