The Herts Phoenix Men’s and Women’s Teams were in action again on Sunday competing in the first round of the BAL Cup competition at Copthall Barnet Stadium, North London. Results are now available on this web site. Despite the might of some of the Teams competing, Herts Phoenix Women’s Team took a very creditable third place in their competition to take them through to the Semi-Finals which will be held on July 21st.

Three new personal bests were set by Women’s Team members, with the most outstanding coming from 15 year Deborah Willis who is rapidly emerging as another of the Club’s prospects for the future.  Like most of her team mates, she had already had a full day of competition the day before at the Herts Schools Championships where she had notched up another personal best in the 300m and hopefully this will see her in the Herts Team being selected for Birmingham.  On this occasion she was running the longer distance, the 400m and took her personal best down below the magic 60 second mark with a 59.76 to take the Club’s Under 17s Women’ s Record set three years ago by Christina Silva.

The other personal bests went to two of the Club’s Combined Eventers, Hayley Kruse with a magnificent Shot Putt of 9.40m and Natalie Farman with a 5.09m Long Jump.  Laura Wake came close to another personal best by running 24.94 seconds for 200m to win her race.  She also had a very busy day the day before, winning the Herts Schools Championships 200m and 300m races and should be given a selectors card to run in Birmingham for Herts in either of the two events.

Ciaran Andrews had an excellent run out over the 100m Hurdles as she begins to return to form with a 14.94 to take second place.  Indeed all of the Team had excellent results finishing in good positions to ensure the Team’s passage into the next round of the competition.
The Women’s Team must now wait for the Semi-Finals draw to find out who they will meet and where.

The Men’s Team did not fair so well, again having to rely on many of its younger up and coming athletes with Kenny Howard back after nearly a year’s injury recording an 11.2 seconds result in his 100m and Ian Tobin continuing with his run of good results with a 22.7 seconds result in his 200m, whilst Nathan Wake was trying to recover from his exertions the day before where he once again out performed all the opposition to book his place in the Hertfordshire Team for Birmingham in July.  But they could only help their team to sixth place, not good enough to take them through to the next round.
