Wake shows his class with another fine performance at Inter-Counties PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 07 August 2007
A large number of the Club’s athletes in the Under 17 age group were representing Hertfordshire on Sunday at the Copthall Barnet Stadium in the South of England Eight Counties Inter-Counties Championships.  Full set of results now available on this web site. Nathan Wake produced another outstanding performance in the 400m as part of his build up to this coming weekend’s National Championships at Sheffield.

Knowing that he would have to run against one of the top ranked sprinters from Kent, Nathan took nothing for granted but for a change did not have an outside lane!  He still had to contend with the other two fastest runners being on his inside and, after a cautious start, Nathan found both the Essex and Kent athletes coming up on to his shoulder.  However, that’s exactly where he kept them, right up until the 300m mark when he put in his change of pace and left them wondering what they have to do to contain him.  They could make no impression as he recorded 48.8 seconds for his second fastest time of the season.

Both of his other England International companions were competing for Hertfordshire, his sister Laura and Stephanie Gaynor.

Laura doubled up in the sprints recording a second place in the 300m (40.3) and a third place in the 200m with 25.6.  The 200m was so close that the first three athletes were given the same time.

Stephanie Gaynor made her win look easy with a good performance in the 80m Hurdles, whilst training partner Helen van Kempen did likewise as she won her B string 80m Hurdles race.

On very good form, and celebrating her selection for the East of England team competing at the UK School Games later in the month, was Katie Grehan as she jumped 5.13m in the Long Jump to record a new personal best and then won the A string Javelin with a throw 31.30m.

Other athletes competing were Louis Walshe and Alex Veitch making up the two strings of the 800m races for Hertfordshire, Danielle Currie (Long and Triple Jump); Deborah Willis (300m and High Jump); Laura Whitehead (800m); Emily Stevens (300mHurdles); whilst Laura Wake; Stephanie Gaynor and Helen van Kempen were members of the 4 x 100m relay team that took second place. Finally, Leo Lundgren celebrated his 16th Birthday with his first Hertfordshire vest and an excellent result in the Triple Jump.
