Young Athletes team claim fine home win PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 02 June 2008
The recent improvement in the Herts Phoenix mens teams was continued with a fighting performance at Gosling Stadium this weekend aided by the welcome return to action of a number of athletes. You can access a full set of results via the "Results" tab to the left of this page.
In the U17 Richard Parker returned from injury to win the 3000m in a time of 10.11.4 to complete a winning double at the distance with David Wilson. Ross Armorgie also returned to deliver victories in the High and Long Jumps clearing 1.75m and 5.48m respectively.

Richard Humphries continued his fine form winning the Hammer with a throw of 45.58m and together with Ben Montgomery achieved yet another double for the team. Nick McNaught, another returning from long term injury, produced solid performances in the 200m and the Javelin.

The under 17 team performances were rounded off by quality performances by Joe Gaynor and Thomas Barfoot who are both acquiring growing reputations.

The under 15 Boys got off to a storming start with Simon Wake and Simon Beavan delivering victories in the 200m. Wake went on to partner Andrew Walshe, who claimed a convincing win in the 800m in a time of 2.09, and then delivered yet another double by taking victory in the 400m. The double winning theme was continued by Sam Higgins and Ross Moorley in the long jump. The under 15s boys performance was topped off by 1500m runner, Vasudev Zaver, with a creditable 4.43.4.

The Under 13s built on their fine performance of recent weeks with Sam Jones supported by newcomer Callum Scutt returning big points in the 100m a feat he repeated in the 200m this time supported by the dependable Harry Gaughan. In the 1500m the promising Nicholas Doyle and Adam Thorpe combined to match their shorter distance colleagues. Jake Cable again showed promise in High Jump and 800m. A good day for the Jones family was rounded off by newcomer James Jones’ 3rd place in shot. Sam Jones, Gaughan, Thorpe and Scutt later combined to retain the U13 boys unbeaten record in 4x100 relay.

The Girls also contributed to the fine home win by the club with the U17s leading the way despite a weakened team.  Claire Humphries and Rebecca Hore teamed up to bring double wins in the A and B string 100m and 80m hurdles and Rebecca then won the A 300m hurdles to make it three out of three.

Deborah Willis provided victories in the 200, 300m and B string Triple Jump, and Eloise Meakins won the A 1500, 3000m and Javelin supported by Millie Phelan who won the A Long Jump and 800m together with a 2nd place in the A string High Jump.
Chloe-Ann Currie won the A string Triple Jump and took second places in the Long Jump and Hammer.  The latter with Jenny Hutchings who also won the B Shot and took another second in the Discus.  Millie Lindgren won the A string Shot, B string Javelin and took second in the A string Discus.  The girls also won both relays with the 4x100m team of Phelan, Lundgen, Currie and Humphries coming from 20m behind to win in exciting style.

In the U15 section there were some sterling performances from the team’s up and coming stars.   Francis Slater and Abbie Griffiths competed in the 100 and 200 metres.  Francis was first and second in A string and Abbie collected two firsts in the B string.
Lizzie Bird took 2nd in the A string 800m dipping under the magic 2m30s with 2.29.1s and Katie Burr won the B string in 2m36s.  In the 1500 Jade Denham and Ella Lloyd took second places with 5m16s and 5m17s respectively.

Gemma Amorgie took the A string High Jump 1st with 1.50m supported by Shannon Proctor who won the B string with 1.20m.  Sarah Miller won both Shot and Discus with distances of 9.21m and 28.42m supported by Helena page who took good points in both events.

Gemma Armorgie and Miriam Franklin took 3rd places in the 75m hurdles and Miriam also collected good team points in the long jump.  The sprinters combined to finish 3rd in the 4x100 relay at the end of the day.

The U13s were equally successful with Emma Slater taking first and second in the A string sprints, supported by Natalie Allen who took first place in both B strings.  Natialie then ran a blistering 11.7 in the 70mHurdles to win and was partnered by Natasha Hadley who took the B string comfortably in 12.1s.  Mary Gough took second in the 800m A string with 2m38.6 and Megan Breen was first in the B string with 2m45.8s.  In the 1200m Laura Coffey was third in the A and Liz Parry 1st in the B string.

Melissa Hadley took a fine first in the Shot Putt with 8.74m and 3rd in the High Jump.

The relay team of the Hadley sisters, Natalie Allen and Emma Slater won an exciting relay to round off a great day for the home club.

Team managers Sally Stevens and Tim Hutchings were very pleased with the performance of the teams, particularly the younger athletes who are now starting to perform really well.  To win the home match is always very satisfying and a real boost to the confidence of all involved for the rest of the season.
