For many years members of the club have organised training camps abroad at Easter time, in the main in Portugal. In 2009 we intend running another training camp in the Monte Gordo/Villa Real de St. Antonio area of Portugal on the Eastern Algarve. A number of our athletes and coaches went there in 2008 and found the local facilities excellent and saw that many international athletes were also using this area as their training base.
Because the organisation of such a trip is logistically complicated there will be a limit on the numbers we can take. The good news is that we expect that this will be more than last year when we took 55 people. Last years organising group of Ian Burrows, Lisa Currie, Jon Humphries and Richard Williams have started making tentative enquiries and intend to run next year’s camp along similar lines to this year but also taking note of the feedback, which was gratefully received from those who attended. Taking into account the current rise in fuel and the knock on effect to airline prices, we expect the cost to be somewhere between £575 and £625 per person, which will include flight, transfers, hotel on half board basis, cycle hire, sports passes, mini busses, tour kit and some evening entertainment. The trip is likely to be for about 11 or 12 days and will be within the Easter holidays 2009, which run from Saturday 4th to Sunday 19th April – please note these are the school holiday dates not the actual trip dates which have yet to be finalised. As soon as all the airlines release their flight schedules and prices we will be able to confirm the dates. This training camp is open to HPX athletes U17 and older who have committed to the winter’s training and who will be competing for the club in 2009.
If there is space we may consider athletes in the second year of the U15 age group but these athletes / parents must speak to a member of the organising group before making their application. This rule will of course not apply to younger siblings of athletes U17 and over that are already going. We would also strongly advise that no athletes under 15 attend without being accompanied by one or more parent/guardian. There is also the opportunity for parents and siblings to attend alongside the training camp if you would like to. As soon as the maximum numbers are known further details will be published.
Please also note that in order to start making firm bookings there will be a deadline of October 17th by which deposits must be paid in order to secure your places and the prices quoted at that time.
These will be clearly published so everyone knows the important details.
The deposit will be £250 per person.
There will be several options for payment plans so as to complete the balance by 6th March 2009. If you wish to discuss any of these issues please speak to one of the organising group. Ian Burrows
