The 53rd running of the St Albans Relays was blessed with glorious weather.  The turnout in the men’s race was slightly down on previous years, probably due to the clash with the first fixture of the Chingford League.

A strong Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers team took over the lead from the holders, Bedford & County, on the second leg, a lead which they did not relinquish, eventually running out as winners by over 4 minutes.  Harrow AC was second with Hillingdon AC third and hosts, Herts Phoenix, in fourth place.  Harrow AC also had the first ‘B’ team home.  The fastest lap was by Neilson Hall of Bedford & County, who was first home on the first leg.

The turnout in the ladies’ race was rather disappointing.  This did not however detract from the race, which was a close run affair with the lead changing on each leg.  Barnet & District eventually ran out as winners, receiving the new ladies trophy.  Ealing, Southall & Middlesex was a close second with St Albans a close third.  Fastest lap went to Emma Grant of Hillingdon AC, who was first home on the first leg.
