On a warm and sunny afternoon at Ware on 25th July the HPX women’s team put up a good show against one of their main rivals for promotion, Ashford AC to finish a close second to them in the match. With a strong wind against for the sprinters and hurdlers, times were never going to be fast but a host of solid performances meant that the match result of Ashford’s 108 points to HPX’s 97 was in the balance until the final events.
In the sprints Frances Slater and Lauren Thompson took first and second in A and B string with Frances unfortunately aggravating a foot injury in the process. Laura Jones stepped into the 200m for her, along with Becca Hore and they recorded second and first places in A and B respectively. This was after Laura had comfortably won the A string 400mH and also taken 1st in the B string shot put. Lauren Thompson comfortably won the 100mHurdles as did Hayley Kruse in the B string – both overcoming the strong headwind to do so. Hayley had already taken two second places in the A string high jump and B string long jump as well as two 3rd places in the B string Triple jump and Hammer competitions amassing good points for the team. Deborah Willis took third in the 400m and Claire Marsh took 2nd in the 3000m B string and 4th in the 800m A string. Charlotte Davies and Natasha Taylor recorded 3rd and 1st in A and B string 1500m respectively whilst Eloise Meakins took 1st in the B string Javelin, 3rd in the A string 3000m and 4th in the pole vault to prove her all round credentials. Peta Lundgren won the A string javelin with 42.22m and shot put and took second in the B string Discus. Sarah Miller was second in the A string Discus approaching 30m and namesake Eve Miller comfortably won the A string Hammer with a throw of over 35metres. Jenny Hutchings took the victory in the B string High jump with 1.55m – the same height as Hayley Kruse who was second in the A competition and Kathy Streatfield won the A string triple jump into the wind with 11.30m and took second in the A string Long Jump. In the relays the club took second in the 4x100m and comfortably won the 4x400m to round off a good day for the club.
With one match left in September Team manager Ian Burrows will be hoping the ladies can record a win and challenge for promotion to Division 1 for next season. |
