Exams over, school term finished so holidays have started. This meant many athletes were not around for the last NJAL match of the year at Mayesbrook Arena on 26th July. That said we were able to field athletes for most events. The weather stayed dry, but the gusty wind prevented personal best performances, apart from a few exceptions.
Men
The main exception being Ben Montgomery with not one but two PBs. Starting the day with a Hammer throw of 37.32m, almost 2m further than his previous best, followed by a Javelin throw of 49.36m, nudging that 50m milestone and enough to win the competition. He also went on to throw discus later in the day. With Ben in the Hammer competition was Alec Wing whose throw of 18.63m was also a new PB. Ross Armorgie joined Ben in the Javelin with a throw of 32.73m. The throws were completed with Leo Lundgren putting the Shot 11.14m. Tom Barfoot and Josh Saydraouten performed well in the 800m, though the headwind on the back straight meant breaking the 2 minute mark was not a likelihood. Tom Gough ran a good 3k and Peter Townsend fought a strong field in the 2k Steeplchase. Alec ran 51.5sec in the 400m to finish a close 2nd. This was after having won the 400m hurdles with 57.4sec. Josh ran the B string hurdles claiming 2nd place. Alec was back again in the 110m hurdles to finish 3rd in his race after catching the 7th hurdle. Ross Armorgie also ran the 110m hurdles, but also badly clipped the 7th barrier, knocking him off his stride, though he finished the race in 4th to gain valuable points. Brad Armorgie ran the 200m in 24.8 sec. Leo jumped into first place in the Triple Jump despite the strong headwind. Anthony Hadgill took 3rd in the B string. Earlier in the day Anthony had taken 2nd place in the Long Jump A string, with Brad taking first in the B string. Brad came 2nd in the High Jump A string with 1.90m, whilst his brother Ross cleared the same height to win the B string. Our 4x100m relay team took part in an exiting race with good clean handovers. Alec ran 1st leg, handing to Josh who passed to Leo, to run the curve, with Brad finishing for us. The 4x400m relay team took a creditable 2nd after another exciting race to finish the day with. Tom (Gough), Alec, Brad and Josh put it all together. Herts Phoenix came 4th overall at the match. This will be ratified once all the results have been checked. Added to our previous match results it will mean a creditable 3rd position in the league for 2009. The men’s team was: Alec Wing, Josh Saydraouten, Brad Armorgie, Ross Armorgie, Tom Barfoot, Tom Gough, Peter Townsend, Ben Montgomery, Anthony Hadgill and Leo Lundgren. Women The ladies team was much depleted but there were some notable performances. Emily Stevens ran in the 100m recording 12.9s and also the 400mH winning the B string and also taking second in the A string 100mH with 15.3s. Birthday girl Becca Hore celebrated turning 17 with a win in the A string 400mH and Deborah Willis and Hannah Lloyd took 2nd and 1st in the 400m A and B strings. Jenny Hutchings was second in the A string High Jump with 1.55m, the same height as Gemma Armorgie recorded in taking 1st in the B string. Jenny then teamed up with chloe-Anne Currie to flex their muscles in the Hammer – both recording third places. Jenny went on to partner Chloe’s sister Danielle in the triple jump both recording 3rd places and Chloe took second in the A string 3000m. Peta Lundgren and Katie Grehan took two 1st places in the Javelin, Peta also picking up two second places in A string shot and B string Discus. Sarah Miller took 4th in the A string discus with 29.61m and won the B string shot with 9.23m. In the relays the 4x100m team of Grehan, Lloyd, Armorgie and Hore was 5th and the 4x400m team of Lloyd, Stevens, Hore and Willis was a fine second. And finally, We'd like to thank the officials who supported us on the day. We had Stuart Broadhead as Timekeeper and Adrian Newman as Track Judge. Sue Armorgie, John Montgomery and Simon Wake assisted me in running the men’s Hammer. Richard Williams and Laura, helped Sue, John and Simon again in judging the women’s Hammer. Nick Lloyd and I assisted the home team with High Jump, as a result of another team failing to provide officials. It helps to make these competitions happen when we all muck in. Team managers Roger Armorgie and Ian Burrows are extremely grateful to all those who have supported them this season and hope to see even more athletes out in the NJL next season. |
