Tuesday, 15 September 2009
The last of the South of England Inter-Counties Championships took place on Sunday 31st August at the Woodside Stadium at Watford with the Under 20 and Under 15 age groups competing against 16 other counties from across the South of England.
Yet again a number, of Herts Phoenix Athletes were in action for their County and it was victories towards the end of the competition from Laura Wake and Leo Lundgren that saw the Hertfordshire Under 20 Team take the Inter-County Title for the first time in over 20 years.

Leo Lungren went into action in the Triple Jump and with an outstanding jump of 14.17m took the Championship Title that added very important points to the County’s hopes of winning.

A little before five o’clock Laura ran an impressive, but easy win in her 200m heat running 25 seconds and then an hour and a half later was back again for the 200m final. This time she had to use all of her strength & speed as she took victory on the line that earned the points to relegate nearest rivals Surrey into second place. Laura had already earlier in the day competed in heats and final of the 100m and having won her heat in 12.58s she went of to finish fourth in the final with 12.52s, admitting “it was not a good race for me”.

Earilier in the day other Herts Phoenix athletes had contributed well to the County’s success with Emily Stevens running another personal best in the 100mHurdles in 15.33 seconds to take a 4th place in the final.

In the Javelin, Katie Grehan took a well earned third place with 33.56m and in the 400m final, Steph Sattin took eighth place in 64.26s.  Rebecca Hore in the 400mHurdles came 8th in 72.16s and in the men’s events Alec Wing came third in the 400mHurdles with an excellent 57.27s run.

All of these performances by our athletes were crucial as Hertforshire won by just 3 points in the end as follows:

1st      Herts         120
2nd     Surrey       117
3rd      Sussex     108.5

In the Under 15s competition there Lizzie Bird was the only Herts Phoenix athlete representing the County but she ran a fine 1500m to  finish third in 4:52.45s.  Here the Hertfordshire Team came second trailing Essex, final Team points were:

1st      Essex        106
2nd     Herts           77
3rd      Kent            73.5
