Herts Phoenix travelled to Stantonbury Park, Milton Keynes on 19th May for the second match in the Southern Athletics League Division 1 and following some good all round performances finished in second place behind the host club. A fine win in the women’s 400m race in 57.92 seconds resulted in Deborah Willis taking the female Athlete of the Match award, she was strongly supported in all the shorter by her team mates in winning both “A” and “B” races in the 100m, 200m and 400m events and in the 15oom race under 17 athletes Florence Stansall-Seiler ran a well controlled race, leading the field until the final straight but just being beaten at the finish to improve her personal best time by more than 10 seconds. There were also pbs in the Triple Jump for Kara Peck second “A” string and Ellie Montgomery in winning the “B” string.

There were also some good performances by the men with a double win in the 800m race for Bben Parry and Louis Walshe, both of whom broke the 2 minute barrier and then Parry going on to win the 1500m race. This match also saw a very welcome return by multi event specialist Pat Barret after a lengthy lay off through injury.

The match was rounded off by both the men’s and women’s teams winning their 4 x 400m relay races by more than 9 and 8 seconds respectively.

The final match result – 1st Milton Keynes 181 points, second Herts Phoenix 173 points, third Worthing 167 points and fourth Luton 147 points. Following the second round of matches Herts Phoenix has moved up 4 places and is currently in 11th place in Division 1.
