A great team effort was rewarded by a superb third place at Stevenage today for our UK Women's League team.  The UK Women's League is the highest level of league competition for our ladies and a delighted team manager, Sally Stevens, said that everyone competing today really battled hard for every point which was so important in a tightly fought contest.  This result leaves the team placed 4th in the league with the last match of the year to be held at Bedford on Saturday July 28th. Stephanie Williams started the track events with 2nd in the 400mH in a new personal best of 64.7, and Eloise Meakins coming 4th in the B string in a time of 83.5. This was a good run out for Steph who is off to Gateshaead next week for English Schools. In the field two Stevenage girls, who compete for Herts Phoenix as higher claim ,Beccy Knapp and Frances Gross threw the Hammer 44.65 and 37.91 to come 3rd and 4th in the event. Also in the field Fin Frederick and Natalie Farman were jumping in the Long Jump to come 7th and 4th with jumps of 5.11 and 4.81. Next on the track was the 800m with Sian Harry, just back from University, running 2.21.0 to come 5th in the A string and Aisling Hayward running 2.43.5 to come 5th in the B string. Olivia Harry jumped 2.90 in the Pole Vault to come 4th, before also travelling up to Gateshaed for English Schools. In the 100m next on the track Emily Stevens, normally a 400m hurdler came 6th in a very tight race in a time of 13.0, while Ciaran Palfreyman came 4th in the B string in a time of 13.7.  All day the sprints were hindered by a stiff breeze against in the home straight. Chloe Vernon-Hamilton, another higher claim Stevenage athlete, jumped 1.45 in the High Jump to come 6th in the A string while Natalie in her second event also jumped 1.45 to come 3rd in the B string. In between the relays, Helena Page took on the steeplechase (without any water because of the hosepipe ban) to come 6th in a time of 8.44.1. The last track events were the relays and in the 4X100m we had Aby, Fin, Olivia and Ciaran, who all got the baton home safely to come 3rd in a time of 50.4. The very last relay the 4x400 was the most exciting. First to run was Steph who got the baton home in 2nd place just behind Crawley. Emily took it second, sat behind the leader and with 150 to go then overtook to come home 20m in front of Crawley. Sian then took the baton and maintained the lead for Deborah to take on the last leg. Crawley had put their very quick 400m individual winner on the last leg and both she and Deborah faught all the way down the home straight for Crawley to just pip us by half a second having run a flat 56s last leg, the time for us was 3.56.5.
