There were some excellent performances by Herts Phoenix’ athletes at the combined 1500 metres, under 13 and Veterans’ Herts Championships on Monday 4th May held at Ridlins Stadium, Stevenage on a warm, sunny day in perfect conditions.
In the 1500 metres Championships Jamie Philpott ran a very controlled race tucked in just behind the leader for the first three and a half laps before making a very determined effort in the home straight to win in a new personal best time of 4 minutes 11.23 seconds. In the under 15 boys’ race, training partners Jake Fenwick, Stephen Bates and Brett Rushman in his first year in the age group ran very well with Stephen knocking 28 seconds off his previous best time and in the under 20 women’s race Florence Stansall-Seiler broke the 5 minute barrier for the first time improving her personal best time by 4 seconds to finish in second place.
There were further outstanding performances in the under 13 Championships especially by Lauren Simpson who not only won both the 100 metres and 200 metres races but also set a new Championship best record of 4.71 metres in winning the Long Jump competition. Julianna Glinkowska won the Girls’ High Jump competition. Mary Olatunji won the bronze medal in the 200 metre race and Daisy Creasey also won bronze in the 70m Hurdles race. Brice Breen won a silver medal in the boys’ 800 metres race and a bronze in the discus competition and team mate Daniel Gill also won bronze in the 800 metres race.
