Despite the very windy and at times wet conditions at the University track, Cambridge on Sunday there were some very good performances by Herts Phoenix athletes competing against teams from Cambridge & Coleridge, Ipswich and Belgrave Harriers. The Armorgie brothers, Bradley, second in “A” string High Jump with a clearance of 1.85m and Triple Jump with 12.19 metres and Ross first in “B” string High Jump with 1.75m and second in “B” string Pole Vault with 2.60m, made their first appearance of the season and Simon Wake returned from university to win the “B” string 110m Hurdles in 21.9 seconds and Pole Vault with 2.10mand achieving a new personal best performance to finish second in the “A” string Javelin competition with a throw of 46.89 metres. There were also wins for Luke Smith in “B” string 400m, Aaron Cooper “A” string 800m, Steve Prosser “B” string 1500m, Nathan Burke “B” string Triple Jump and Jason Kingwell in “A” string Discus.

Unfortunately, several women were not available for this match as they had been invited to compete in the prestigious Bedford International Games meeting on the same afternoon, however, those who were able to compete performed well and gained useful points for the team. Sophie Segun and Hannah Lloyd won the 200 metres in 25.2 and 400m Hurdles in 64.2 respectively. Florence Stansall-Seiler, again running inside the Schools National Standard in 5:11.2 and Elizabeth Doyle 6:49.7 gained maximum points in the 1500m Steeplechase as did training partners Louise Reilly with 1.53m and Sally Cowler with 1.40m respectively in the High Jump, Sally also won the “A” string Long Jump with a leap of 5.20 metres.
