This was an excellent performance by Herts Phoenix Senior Men’s and Women’s teams in taking full advantage of their home fixture, held at Gosling Stadium, Welwyn Garden City on Saturday 20th June to win the third match in the series by more than 80 points over second placed Basildon and a further 30 points ahead of West Suffolk and Eastbourne.
On an afternoon of numerous first places for the Club’s athletes, several of them also set new personal best performances, Simon Wake won the “A” string Javelin with a new pb of 49.46 metres, an improvement of over 3 metres, he also set new pb’s in 110m Hurdles and Shot Putt. Under 17 athlete Jamie Philpott achieved an English Schools Entry Standard when improving his 1500 metres time by 5 seconds to 4 minutes 6.5 seconds. Competing for the Senior Men’s team for the first time and setting new pb’s were George Cook with 16:57.2 in winning the “B” string 5000 metres, Alex Harrison, under 17 ran 66.1 to win the “A” string 400m Hurdles and Adam Hughes, also under 17 won the “B” string 3000m Steeplechase in 7:31.7. With his win in the “A” string 2000m Steeplechase and running close to his personal best time Peter Townsend was awarded the Male Athlete of the Match award.
Not to be out done by their male colleagues there were new pb’s recorded by under 17 Louise Reilly of 1.63 metres to win the “A” string High Jump, she also won the “B” string 400 metres in a time of 63.2 seconds and fellow under 17 athlete Sophie Segun won the “A” string 100 metres in 12.5 seconds. Florence Stansall-Seiler knocked 7 seconds from her previous record to finish in second place in the “B” 1500 metres race. There was a very welcome return to club athletics by Lizzy Janes after 6 years away from Track and Field and following a very good cross country season saw her comfortably win the “A” string 3000 metres in 10:08.5 and then just an hour and a half later she also won the 1500 metres “A” string race in 4:38.7. for her performance in the 3000 metres race she was awarded the Female Athlete of the Match award
