Herts Phoenix on the World Stage

Herts Phoenix have had the privilege to watch 2 of their athletes get their first call up to the national team, and it went very successfully!

Hannah Williams was selected to represent Great Britain in the 400m at the World Youth Championships in Cali (COL). She went into these championships with a PB of 54.39 seconds, and throughout the course of the rounds knocked 1.15 seconds, to run a PB of 53.24 seconds placing her 6th in the final. If knocking down her PB wasn’t enough, she also took some records with her.

Hannah is now the Herts Phoenix U20 400m record holder, ranked 4th for her age group, and 19th of all age groups this season. She has also put herself firmly in the UK U20 all time list at 18th, and 96th of all UK females in history. Astonishingly this is Hannah’s first season doing 400m, and so as Hannah’s confidence in this challenging distance grows, she will no doubt go faster and faster!

Anthony Bryan had a busy summer after being called up for the England squad in the 1500m and 800m (T37/F37) at the Cerebral Palsy World Games. You wouldn't believe this was his first championship in an England vest, as he smashed his PB in the 800m by 8 seconds to run 2:45.0 seconds and in the 1500m ran 5:50.0 seconds knocking 12 seconds off his PB, earning him the 2 gold medals and 2 world titles! So a massive congratulations to Herts Phoenix’s first ever SENIOR WORLD CHAMPION!

This is what Anthony has to say about the experience:

"It was an amazing opportunity to experience an international competition and mix with other athletes all with the potential of becoming future paralympians. It has definitely given me the confidence and drive to push to reach that higher level as the coaches are really encouraging. This was just the first step to an international career. I was very proud to be wearing the England kit, representing my country, and standing to the national anthem, as I received my medals. It makes all that hard work and training really worth it.'

And with Jodie Williams on our screens in Beijing for the World Championships in the 4x100m, Herts Phoenix can continue to enjoy watching club grown talent achieve on the biggest athletics stages in the world!
