Records tumble and English Schools beckons for our young athletes
Many Herts Phoenix athletes competed on Saturday 11th June 2016 at the Hertfordshire Schools Athletics Competition in Hemel Hempstead. A number of outstanding, record breaking performances took place with some Herts Phoenix athletes booking their slot at the prestigious English Schools Competition taking place at Gateshead International Stadium next month.
Three standout performances were those of Christa Hetherington (U15), Ben Lloyd (U17) and Katie Lloyd (U13).
Christa, who is currently ranked 7th in the UK for her age group, took gold in the 75m hurdles, smashed the Championship Record, which had stood for 38 years, and booked her place to English Schools as she achieved the National Standard. Christa also secured gold in the 100m, an event for which she is currently ranked 14th in the UK.
An equally impressive performance was that of Ben Lloyd. Ben secured gold in the 400m hurdles, equaled the Championship Record and booked his place to English Schools having achieved the National Standard. Ben’s result is particularly outstanding as it puts him 3rd in the UK for his age group, even though he is in his first year as an under 17. Ben then went on to win another gold in the 400m.
Katie Lloyd, not to be outdone by her big brother Ben, produced another Herts Phoenix stellar performance by breaking the pre-junior girls 800m record and winning gold. An undoubted talent for the future.
Shaka Egbo (U15) has also booked her place to English Schools by taking gold in the high jump, an event for which she is currently ranked 4th in the UK for her age group.
Congratulations also to Megan Fielding (U17) who competed in the long jump and achieved the entry standard for English Schools.
Well done also to Callum Stern (U13) who competed in the 75m hurdles, left the field for dust in his heat and won gold in the final.
Congratulations go to every single one of our athletes who competed on Saturday.
