The senior women’s team had their final UK Women’s Athletics League match in Manchester, which was the annual weekend away competition. After being promoted into division 2, the standard has been much higher this season. Out of the 8 teams in the league, 6 teams could still be relegated in this final match, including Herts Phoenix, therefore every point counted. The team came 6th in the final match, which placed Herts Phoenix 5th overall in the final league standings. The team have stepped up to this new level of competition with some excellent performances.
The wins of the match came from Emily Hack in the 400m (B string) in 57.86 seconds, Steph Williams in the 800m (B string) in 2:14.95 seconds, and Laura Armorgie in the High Jump (A string) leaping to 1.70m. The stand out performance of the day was by Joceline Monteiro in the 800m (A string). She won in 2:04.92 seconds, which was a division record that had stood since the 70s!
There were also personal best performances from Lauren Rule in the 200m (B string) with 25.61 seconds. The 1500m athletes set personal bests; Joceline Monteiro ran 4:28.78 seconds, and Ellie Bandy ran 5:31.42 seconds. Emily Hack threw a personal best in the shot putt with a 7.61m throw. All our horizontal jumpers achieved personal bests. Sophie Segun jumped 4.81m, whilst Ellie Bandy jumped 4.51m in the long jump. Aby Griffiths jumped 10.10m in the triple jump, with Laura Armorige making her debut in this event with 9.57m.
Both relay teams had strong performances, but the stand out was the 4x400m team. They came 2nd in a very strong field with a time of 3:51.02 seconds.
It was amazing to see the team spirit at this competition. A big thank you to all athletes who have been competed in this league over the course of the season, cementing our position in division 2 was the goal and we have definitely achieved it. A special mention to the higher claim athletes who became valued members of the team.
And finally congratulations to Nick Lloyd, Richard Bloom, Chloe McCarthy, Emily Hack and Lauren Rule aka #SquadGoals who won the UKWAL Quiz!
