I feel very privileged to introduce myself as the new Chairman of Herts Phoenix Athletic Club. My name is Aby Griffiths, I joined the club some 12 years ago and have since competed in a wide cross section of events, from 100m to 3000m, from triple jump to hammer, though my first love comes in the form of the 400m! I have sat on committee for the last 2 years as athlete representative and have been inspired by the commitment and passion shown by all of its members. Outside of athletics, I work as a physiotherapist. I see this new position of chairman as a fantastic opportunity to start giving back to the club that has given me so much.
Firstly, I would like to thank Richard Bloom for his 8 years of service to the club as chairman, and many years before that on committee. I feel at this moment it is only right to recognise the huge contribution Richard has made to the club. Whilst the majority of what he does day to day may occur behind the scenes or out of sight, without it the club simply would not function. On behalf of the club and committee, I would like to say a resounding thank you! Fortunately though, we are not losing Richard - he is stepping into the role of Gosling Vice-Chairman where he will continue to be a great asset to the club.
When I was choosing which athletics club to join at the age of 11, I chose Herts Phoenix because it had a reputation of being open, friendly and inclusive. As Chairman, I want to keep these values at the core of what we do, whilst pushing the club forward to be more competitive and focused than ever before. I want athletes to feel supported, no matter their level of ability, be that juniors rising from our Sports Hall ranks, through to the national level senior athletes, whose achievements never cease to inspire. That’s a pretty big goal, and the only way myself and the committee can achieve this, is if we listen to you. Our athletes, our volunteers and our parents. I will endeavour to speak to as many as I can over the coming weeks and months, to gather your thoughts on how we can progress this fantastic club.
I would like to thank you for all your continued support and look forward to what the new season has in store.
