Several Herts Phoenix athletes competed with some success in the South of England Track and Field Championships held at Crystal Palace last weekend.
Wodson Park, Ware based Sam Woodley set a personal best and a new Club record when winning the Under 20 Men's Discus with a throw of 48.55 metres and colleague Nathan Burke cleared 13.13 metres to claim second place in the Under 20 Men's Triple Jump competition. Eloise Meakins, who trains at Wodson, threw 46.40 metres to win the silver medal in the Senior Women's Javelin and Aaron Cooper also based at Wodson qualified as a fastest loser in heat 5 of the Senior Men's 400 metres with a time of 1:56.02, which is a new personal best time and then finished in seventh place in his semi-final race.
Club colleagues who train at Gosling Stadium, Welwyn Garden City also put in some fine performances. Under 20 Woman Erin Breen set a new personal best and equalled the Club record when taking the silver medal in the Pole Vault with a clearance of 3.40 metres and Imogen Walker finished equal 7th when clearing 2.80 metres, Imogen also finished 6th in heat 3 of the 400 metres with a time of 60.49 seconds. Training partners Georgina Anderson and Sophie Segun ran in the Under 20 Women's 200 metres with Georgina finishing 6th in heat 3 and Sophie qualifying for the final with a time of 25.73 when finishing second in heat 1 and then came 8th in the final with 27.45. Three Senior Women competed in the 400 metres Hurdles heats and all progressed to the final in which Lauren Thompson (2nd in heat 2 in 62.17) finished with the silver medal with a time of 59.61 seconds, Alexandra Hill (2nd in heat 1 in 63.55)finished 5th in 62.22 seconds and unfortunately Melanie Grigg (5th in heat 2 in 64.92) was unable to start the final. Eden Davis finished second in heat 3 of the Under 20 Men's 100 metres to qualify for the final in which he finished 8th in 11.73 seconds.
