Herts Phoenix Cross Country Championships

January 16, 2018

On Saturday 6th January two of the Clubs' athletes competed in the Essex County Championships held in Great Notley Park, Witham. On a bright frosty morning with very muddy conditions underfoot over a largely flat course with a steep hill that had to be negotiated on each of the two laps  Afewerk Rossom, competing in the under 20 men's race ran a steady well controlled race to finish in an excellent third place, having not been able to train for the previous two weeks due to a heavy cold and only finally deciding to compete as he made his way to the start line. His team mate Amaniel Tesfay also had a very good race to finish in 12th place

On Sunday 7th January about 30 of the club's athletes in all age groups competed in the Hertfordshire County Championships held in Cassiobury Park, Watford. In contrast to the previous day the weather was very dull with a bitterly cold wind sweeping across the park. The underfoot conditions in the park area were good for the athletes, however, for those who had to run in the wooded areas conditions were much tougher and muddier and all athletes had a long relentless uphill run to the finishing funnel.  The under 11 girls made an excellent start to the meeting with Tilly Major winning the race just one second in front of team mate D'arcy Wright and Caitie Reid coming home in 4th place to wrap up the Team award, Willow Thomas finished in 11th place. Ethan Primett had an excellent race being just pipped on the line to come second, but given the same time as the winner and together with team mates George Ward 10th and John Sporborg 11th coming second in the Team competition. Freya Stapleton continued her excellent recent form to comfortably win the under 15 girls' race and Lottie Rowedder ran very strongly to repeat last year's win in the under 17 women's race by just over a minute from the second placer. Joe Smith finished in 4th place in the Under 17 men's race. George Cook in his first cross country race for some time ran well to come second in the under 20 men's race. In the final event of the day John Eves easily won the Senior men's race with a margin of almost a minute over his nearest rival.
