Our senior women’s team had their first UK Womens Athletics League (UKWAL) match of the season against 7 other clubs from all around the UK. It was in the blisteringly hot conditions of Sunday at Bedford which for once had very little wind. For some athletes this was the ideal conditions for PBs whereas for some events it was just too hot.
Every single athlete who competed helped the team to an amazing 2nd place finish. We said we wanted to go for promotion again this year and the athletes certainly delivered for a very promising start.
Lauren Thompson got the team off to a great start with a win in the 400 hurdles A string race with an amazing PB catapulting her to 6th place in the UK this year. Megan Breen gained valuable points with a 3rd place in the B race.
This was quickly followed by a win for Joceline Monteiro in the 800 (A) and a 3rd place in the B race for Steph Williams.
Our sprint hurdlers performed really well with a 3rd place for Lauren Thompson (A) and a 1st place in the B race for Chloe Vernon-Hamilton in her first match as a member of Herts Phoenix.
Our distance pairing of Georgia Tuckfield-also in her first match for the club, and Lottie Rowedder who had stepped up to the UKWAL for the first time both had a successful competition with Georgia placing 3rd in the 3000 A race and Lottie 1st in the B string.
They then went on to compete in the 1500 where Georgia achieved a 4th place in the A and Lottie 2ndin the B. Fantastic efforts in the heat of the day.
Faye Ivory who is also new to the club ran a PB in the 100m and 200m.
Our field athletes also had some excellent results for the team including a double 1st for our Javelin throwers- Eloise in the A and Emma Fossett B.
Chloe Vernon-Hamilton claimed a 2nd place in the Shot Putt (A) very close to her PB and 2nd in the triple jump (A)
Laura Armorgie jumped to a 2nd place in the high jump (A) with Sally Cowler achieving a 3rd place in the B competition.
Rebecca Porter who is a member of Herts Phoenix travels all the way from Scotland to compete for her club. She achieved a 3rd place in the discus (B) while Emma Fossett had claimed 6th in the A with a PB throw.
Aby Tobin jumped a PB in the long jump.
Although we have highlighted the top 3 positions in events along with PBs we really appreciate the effort that ALL OUR ATHLETES put in to achieve such an amazing result. This is a real team event.
The atmosphere and the support of the athletes for each other was brilliant and the day was completed with a lot of noise and support for the 2 very exciting relays.
The 4 x100 runners consisting of Sophie Segun, Laura Armorgie, Sally Cowler and Joceline Monteiro (1 sprinter, 2 jumpers and an 800 specialist) were told just get the baton round safely but they did an amazing job in 50.95sec to take 4th place.
The 4 x400 team of Joceline Monteiro, Georgia Tuckfield , Chloe Vernon- Hamilton and Lauren Thompson fought all the way to the line to take 2nd place in a nail biting finale in a time of 3.59.77.
The 2nd place in the match was with a very convincing score safely ahead of 3rdplace.
Thank you also to our officials who also earn valuable points. Richard Bloom, Stuart Broadhead, Gary Cowler and Stuart Meakins.
Sue Armorgie & Emma Lloyd.
