Report on UK Women’s Athletic League 2018

‘Promotion for Herts Phoenix Senior Women’s team’

Herts Phoenix Senior Women’s Team (U20 and seniors) have had an excellent season in the UK Women’s Athletic League (UKWAL). This is a national league requiring travel around the Country but the female athletes have represented the club very well despite having to commit to weekends away in order to compete.

The team have been competing in Division 2 this season but due to the excellent results at each match – (never finishing below 2ndout of the 8 clubs competing), the team have gained promotion to Division 1 for next year. Herts Phoenix finished 2ndin the division only 1 point behind Wigan the winners and a massive 7 league points ahead of Newham & Essex Beagles, the 3rdplaced club. This is a massive achievement and will bring even greater competition for the athletes next year.

Although there have been many excellent individual performances, this success has been a fantastic team effort. The club has a lot of talented individuals across all disciplines and the team benefited from all athletes competing in their own event(s) at the matches and also from those same team members competing in events other than their specialism in order to fill all events and maximise the team points. It has also been a team effort, in that points have been more or less evenly earned by runners, throwers and jumpers.

Another indication of the team ethos is that 27 athletes have represented the Club over the three matches, these were first claim members: Georgina Anderson, Laura Armorgie, Ellie Bandy, Erin Breen, Megan Breen, Hannah Booth, Sally Cowler, Elizabeth Doyle, Alicia Found, Lara Hansen, Faye Ivory, Hayley Kruse, Georgia McKenzie, Eloise Meakins, Eleanor Moss, Rebecca Porter, Lottie Rowedder, Sophie Segun, Lauren Thompson, Aby Tobin, Georgia Tuckfield, Chloe Vernon-Hamilton, Imogen Walker and Stephanie Williams, also Higher Claim Athletes: Emma Fossett, Joceline Monteiro and Lauren Rule.

We would like to thank all of you for continuing to support this league so well and for making each match so much fun.

We would also like to thank the officials who have helped us this season : Richard Bloom, Stuart Broadhead, Gary Cowler, Peter Fitzpatrick and Stuart Meakins. Plus Nick Lloyd for team managing for us in Liverpool. You are all part of the team effort too.

Congratulations to the Team, who can look forward to another exciting season in 2019.

Sue Armorgie & Emma Lloyd
